As we are a social species, designed to live and interact with others in a tribal setting, it is not surprising that we conform to group pressure and peer pressure and we often don't even notice we are doing it. Sometimes people feel uncomfortable for years before they realise that they are living in the wrong neighbourhood and so move to one that reflects their own social ideals and interests. Other times a friend will say that they really admire a certain person and we find ourselves minimising our own discomfort about the same said person just in order to feel more at ease when with our friend.
Tribal chiefs: This is a fascinating phenomena, with the majority of it's game players being men. The tribal chief or elder is the role these men most enjoy because it boosts their self esteem but they are actually insecure and carry a certain amount of fragility and vulnerability. These men need the attention and praise of others and dislike being just one of a crowd or not in the limelight. Their need can become a pathology when they will hurt or harm others who might be seen as likely to expose their inauthenticity or shallowness. Sometimes this type of man will hide behind intellectual ideas which entice and seduce their followers but can be little more than empty show.
Because of their inherent insecurity, these men put down or attack anyone who questions them for the men believe that to question them, is to threaten their authority. It often means they can become subtle or not so subtle bullies, and the group around them projects their own issues of needing this man to be a father figure or chief/wise elder that the 'followers' too will block or squash any dissent from those who are beginning to see through the emperor's new clothes.
Painful though it sometimes can be, the best thing to do is walk away. Some dinosaurs are best left and may go on to chomp a fair number of people, but they are not worth the pain of tackling on your own. And their followers own desperately needy projections are colouring their own view of this man, that they will not be able to heed advice to be careful and be wary.
